Republican congressional candidate Vernon Jones has said he will introduce articles of impeachment against President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris on his first day in Congress if he’s elected.
The Trump-endorsed Jones took to Twitter on Wednesday and appeared to pledge to bring forward articles of impeachment, adding he would vote for former President Donald Trump to become speaker of the House of Representatives.
Some Republicans have also suggested that President Biden could face impeachment if the GOP wins control of the House in November, with Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) saying there were “multiple grounds” to consider it.
“On Day One in Congress, I’ll file Articles of Impeachment against both Joe Biden and Kamala Harris for the betrayal of public trust,” Jones tweeted.
“Then I’ll cast my vote for President Trump to be Speaker and invite my colleagues to join me. It’s time to throw out the old playbook,” he added.
According to the order of presidential succession, if both the president and vice president were removed from office, the speaker of the House would then become president.
Jones is not alone in expressing a willingness to bring articles of impeachment against Biden. Both Representatives Lauren Boebert of Colorado’s 3rd district and Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia’s 14th district have introduced articles of impeachment.
On December 31, 2021, Senator Cruz said on his show Verdict with Ted Cruz: “I think there are potentially multiple grounds to consider for impeachment. Probably the most compelling is the utter lawlessness of President Biden’s refusal to enforce the border.”
Jones is running for in Georgia’s 10th congressional district in the hopes of succeeding Republican Representative Jody Hice. Hice is running for Georgia secretary of state against incumbent Republican Brad Raffensperger.
On Monday, Jones announced he was pulling out of the race for Georgia governor and endorsed former Senator David Perdue, who has won former President Trump’s support.
Perdue is mounting a primary challenge to Republican Governor Brian Kemp. Both Kemp and Raffensperger have faced criticism from Trump for their role in the 2020 presidential election.
Both men have defended the integrity of the election in Georgia and disputed unfounded claims of mass voter fraud and other irregularities.
Trump endorsed Jones in his House race in a video posted to Rumble on Wednesday.
“He’s an America-first fighter, who will never back down to the establishment or the radical left,” Trump said of Jones.
Jones said in a statement that he was “proud to have President Trump’s endorsement, confidence, and support as I seek to represent the people of Georgia’s 10th Congressional District.”
“America First movement is alive and well! The squad better get ready!” he said.
Jones was formerly a Democrat and served as CEO of DeKalb County, Georgia from 2001 to 2009. He was a member of the Georgia House of Representatives from 2017 to 2021.
