One of the city’s most powerful unions endorsed Maya Wiley in her mayoral run Friday, February 19, 2021, giving her campaign a much-needed shot in the arm after it failed to qualify for public matching funds earlier in the week.

The endorsement from 1199 SEIU, which represents healthcare workers and is the largest union in the city, is a huge stamp of approval for Wiley and will most certainly translate into the union lending its get-out-the-vote muscle to her City Hall run.

“Maya Wiley has the experience and vision needed to move us forward, and to re-imagine what our city can be when working people have access to the tools and support needed to live with dignity,” the union’s president George Gresham said.

”Maya’s priorities are our priorities – from investing in and fairly compensating our caregivers to rebuilding our economy through job creation and training.”

The endorsement comes a week after Wiley delivered a speech highlighting plans to pay stay-at-home caregivers $5,000 a year through money from the NYPD’s budget.
