Due in court today are the two Aurora fire rescue paramedics, two Aurora police officers, and one former Aurora police officers.

Back in September, a grand jury indicted the three police officers and two paramedics on 32 charges in connection to the August 2019 death of 23-year-old Elijah McClain.

According to the indictment, the officers put him in a chokehold, took him to the ground, and handcuffed him.

The paramedics then injected him with 500 mg of Ketamine to sedate him. The standard dose of the drug is usually 1mg to 4.5 mg.

Elijah died three days later.

They are all facing charges of manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide, and second-degree assault.

Following McClain’s death, last year the Aurora police department entered into a consent decree with the state.

This is aimed to fix how officers within the department use force and interact with people of color.

Also, a law was passed last year that will prevent paramedics from using Ketamine outside of hospitals without a person’s consent.

The two paramedics and officers are on unpaid administrative leave.

The former officer, Jason Rosenblatt, was fired after he was found to have laughed and mocked an image that showed McClain in a chokehold.

The hearings are set for 1:30 MST/ 3:30 EST
